Hiking with Kids: Easy Northwest Trails for Young Legs

by Christian Ching

The trick to hiking with kids is choosing a trail that ends before they run out of patience. Around Portland that is easy, because short, gentle paths are close to almost every neighborhood. The goal is not distance. It is a walk everyone finishes happy and wants to do again.

Short loops close to home

Mt. Tabor is a good first hike, with wide paths, open lawns, and a gentle climb that feels like an adventure without wearing anyone out. Tryon Creek State Natural Area in Lake Oswego is another favorite, with shaded creekside trails that stay cool and a nature center when little legs need a break.

Easy walks in the Gorge

The waterfall paths near the historic highway offer a big payoff for very little walking. A short walk to see the base of a waterfall is plenty exciting for young hikers. Keep the plan short, go early to beat the crowds, and turn back whenever energy starts to fade.

Across the river in Washington

Camas and Washougal have gentle waterside trails that work well for families. The paths around Lacamas Lake are flat enough for strollers and for kids on bikes, with water views most of the way. It is an easy outing when you want open space rather than a climb.

How to keep it fun

  • Pick trails under a couple of miles and let them set the pace.
  • Bring more snacks and water than you think you need.
  • Turn every stop into a game: find a leaf, spot a bird, count the bridges.
  • Check the weather and dress in layers. Northwest mornings start cool.
  • Let the kids lead sometimes. Ownership keeps them moving.

Keep everyone safe

Stay on marked trails, keep young children within arm's reach near water and drop-offs, and carry a small first-aid kit for scrapes. A simple rule works well: the hike ends when the fun does, not when the map says so.

Ask a local

If you are relocating and want a neighborhood close to family-friendly trails, Christian Ching is the local agent to ask. He knows the Portland metro and the Southwest Washington towns well and can point you toward the right area.
