Playgrounds with Shade, Benches, and Room to Run

by Christian Ching

Once you have a few parks in the rotation, you start to notice the ones that make an afternoon easy and the ones that wear you out. Shade, seating, and open space are the three things that separate a quick stop from a place you can spend two hours. Here is what to look for and where to find it around the metro.

Shade is the first thing to check

Portland summers are mild, but a play structure in full sun still gets hot by afternoon, and so do the kids. Look for a playground with mature trees nearby or a canopy over the equipment. Late morning and early evening are your best windows when the shade is thin.

Benches tell you a park is used

A ring of benches facing the play area usually means parents gather here and watch together. It also means you have somewhere to sit while a toddler climbs the same steps for the tenth time. If there is nowhere to sit, you will be standing, and the visit will be shorter.

Room to run matters more than you think

Playgrounds are for climbing, but kids also need open grass to sprint, kick a ball, and burn off energy safely away from the street. A park with a field next to the equipment lets you stretch a visit without moving the whole operation. Laurelhurst Park and Mt. Tabor both give you that combination.

Water, restrooms, and the small stuff

Before you commit to a long stay, check for a drinking fountain, a restroom, and trash cans. A splash pad or a nearby wading area helps on hot days. These basics are what make a park workable for a full afternoon rather than a twenty-minute stop.

Finding your go-to

The best park is the one that fits your kids' ages right now, and that changes as they grow. Try a few across the metro, from Vancouver and Camas to Gresham and Lake Oswego, and keep the one that makes an ordinary afternoon feel easy.
