Rainy-Day Portland: Climbing Gyms, Bowling, and Movie Nights

by Christian Ching

Portland's rainy season isn't a reason to stay home — it's a reason to head indoors. From bouldering walls to retro bowling alleys to a movie house where you can order a real dinner, the metro has plenty of ways to spend a wet afternoon. Here's a practical short list for the next stretch of gray days.

Climbing gyms for every level

The metro has a healthy spread of climbing gyms, from big bouldering warehouses to smaller spots with top-rope and auto-belay walls. If you've never climbed, start with bouldering — no ropes, no partner, and you can drop in for an hour and leave whenever your forearms give out. Most gyms rent shoes and run a short orientation for first-timers. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quietest times if you'd rather not wait for a turn.

Bowling, arcades, and games

Bowling is the classic rainy-day answer, and the region still has plenty of lanes, from old-school alleys to modern centers with arcades attached. Reserve a lane online on weekends — walk-ins can mean a long wait after dinner. If you want something more active, look for trampoline parks, indoor mini golf, and batting cages around the metro. They're family-friendly, and most let you book a time slot ahead so you're not standing in line.

Movie nights and small theaters

Portland is a good city for movie lovers. Beyond the big multiplexes, there are independent theaters that show second-run films, classics, and new releases with real food and drinks brought to your seat. A dinner-and-a-movie night is an easy way to fill an evening without getting rained on. Check showtimes early — popular weekend screenings do sell out.

Make an afternoon of it

Pair a couple of activities and you've got a full day. Climb in the morning, grab lunch, then catch a movie in the afternoon. Or spend the day near the Pearl District and downtown, where you can walk between a gym, a restaurant, and a theater without moving the car. Just plan your parking and expect garage rates in the core.

If you're weighing a move to the Portland metro and want to know which neighborhoods put you close to the things you love doing, Christian Ching is the local agent to ask.
